Intrauterine Device (IUD)

An Intrauterine Device or IUD is a small T-Shaped device which is implanted in the uterus to prevent unwanted pregnancy. There are two types of IUDs used within Australia – Hormonal IUDs (Mirena and Kyleena) and Copper IUDs.

Hormonal IUDs

Mirena and Kyleena are hormonal IUDs. Both are plastic T-shaped devices inserted into the uterus to prevent sperm from contacting the egg. Both types of IUD can be inserted with or without anaesthesia and is offered at our practice. The cost for a hormonal IUD is $190.00 + the cost of the device (purchased from the pharmacy prior to the appointment). The maximum duration for this contraceptive option is 5 years.

Copper IUDs

Copper IUDs are best for women who are unable to use hormone containing contraception. Similar to the hormonal IUDs, the copper IUD is inserted into the uterus to prevent the egg from being fertilised. Anaesthesia is available if required. The cost for the copper IUD is $190.00 + the cost of the device (purchased from the pharmacy prior to the appointment). The maximum duration for this contraceptive option is 5 to 10 years depending on the type of copper IUD.
