Pre-Employment Medicals

Pre-employment Medicals are essential during the recruitment phase for employers to identify the suitability of a potential employee for a specific position. They are used to screen individuals to identify risk factors that may influence their ability to perform their job safely and efficiently and meet the health and safety demands of the position. Pre-employment medicals can also benefit companies by reducing the risk of injuries in the workplace, reducing costs and incidents of insurance time, minimising downtime and medical leave, matching the demands of the job with capacity of the individual and alerting employees of unknown medical conditions to allow them to seek early treatment.

Pre-employment medicals at Whitsunday Doctors Service may involve a range of different components including:

  • Review of medical history,
  • Medical examination including GP review of :
    • anthropometric measures
    • cardiovascular examination
    • musculoskeletal examination
    • skin examination
    • central nervous system examination
  • Vision assessments including colour vision
  • Urinalysis
  • Audiometry assessment (hearing)
  • Spirometry Assessment (lung function)
  • Electrocardiogram (ECG)

**Drug and Alcohol Screening is not included within the CMWHS assessment however can be performed additionally by QML Pathology within our practice.

How to prepare for your pre-employment medical:

  • Arrive on time for your medical
  • Bring photo Identification
  • Pre-fill paperwork if possible and bring to appointment
  • Bring corrective lenses or hearing aids if required
  • Wear loose, comfortable clothing
  • Bring list of medications if required
  • Avoid caffeine and/or smoking on day of appointment
  • Bring water bottle
  • Avoid loud noises and/or music
